Oscar nominations 2013: as they happened

Zero Dark Thirty Oscar Nominations: Movie Selected for Best Picture

Other than Django UnchainedZero Dark Thirty may be the most controversial movie nominated for an Oscar this year, with its graphic torture scenes, but it has nonetheless been selected as a nomination for Best Picture.
On Thursday, host Seth MacFarlane and actress Emma Stone announced the nominees for the 85th Annual Academy Awards Best Picture, which included: Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty.
But, this film in particular has drawn scrutiny for its depiction of the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. After seeing the film, three U.S. Senators, Democrats Dianne Feinstein and Carl Levin, along with Republican John McCain, wrote a letter condemning the film’s portrayal of torture. "Zero Dark Thirty is factually inaccurate, and we believe that you have an obligation to state that the role of torture in the hunt for Osama bin Laden is not based on the facts, but rather part of the film's fictional narrative," the letter said.

We will watch closely to see if Kathryn Bigelow's film will win the Best Picture award at Oscars 2013. Stay tuned.Watch the trailer for Zero Dark Thirty:

'Tintin' earns Rs 7.35 crore in opening weekend

New Delhi: Animation movie The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of The Unicorn has earned about Rs.7.35 crore over three days, making it the highest opening for any Steven Spielberg film in India.
The film released with over 350 prints in both English and Hindi in the 3D and 2D formats. Apart from the big cities, this is the first movie to open simultaneously in smaller centres like Alwar, Gwalior, Akola, Amravati, Madurai, Salem and Trichur.

"Not only is the animated genre gaining ground amongst all age groups in India, but Tintin is unique in the sense that the franchise is enjoyed and appreciated by a very wide audience right from kids to adults who grew up on Tintin," Kercy Daruwala, managing director, Sony Pictures India, said in a statement.

"There is an amazing passion for both the franchise and the film in India with even celebrities like Aamir Khan giving the film an enthusiastic thumbs-up. The film's collections have increased day upon day and we expect to see the film sustain strongly based on excellent word of mouth," Daruwala added.
Tintin fans can't stop heaping praise on the animated franchise and term it an intelligent film.

"There is not a dull moment in the movie. You never feel you are watching animated characters because they are so true to life. And at the same time it doesn't not step away from the Tintin cartoon," said Brishti Ganguly, a young school-going fan.

Praising the film, Anand V, another Tintin fan, said: "Spielberg has not made a predictable film. He has merged three-four Tintin comics in the movie in a very intelligent way. The characters are fantastic - Captain Haddock is lovable. All the characters live up to their images."

Katrina goes desi for Lucknow stage

Katrina Kaif had Lucknow swaying to her moves on Saturday when she performed at the opening ceremony of the inaugural Hockey India League (HIL) in the city.

The superstar, who has emerged as Bollywood's most popular female stage artiste lately, chose to make an ethnic statement for her performance. She sizzled in a red lehnga and matching embroidered choli, accessorised with silver jewellery.

The venue was Dhyan Chand Stadium. Nargis Fakhri and Shiamak Davar's dance troupe were the other performers at the show preceding the opening match between Delhi Waveriders and Uttar Pradesh Wizards.

Incidentally, Saturday was a double whammy for Katrina fans. After performing in Lucknow in the morning, she flew back to Mumbai where she was scheduled to perform with Salman Khan at the opening ceremony of Celebrity Cricket League season 3 later in the night.

At the Lucknow event, Katrina chose to avoid her more popular item dances such as 'Chikni Chameli' and 'Sheila ki Jawaani', and opted to perform on two other hits. She presented 'Mashallah' from Ek Tha Tiger and 'Ishq Shava' from Jab Tak Hai Jaan, her back-to-back blockbusters in 2012.

In all, Katrina performed for around 10 minutes. Although authorities refused to confirm, sources said Kat - who is known to charge anything between Rs.3.5-5 crore for a halfhour performance, would have made a cool Rs.1-1.5 crore for her Lucknow performance.

Nargis, who took to stage for about five minutes, grooved to her tracks from her debut film, Rockstar. Shiamak Davar's troupe presented a colourful fusion of varied dance styles. Lately, Katrina seems to have emerged as the first-choice performers for event organisers.

Last year, much controversy was generated when she allegedly replaced original choice Kareena Kapoor to perform at a high-profile wedding, despite demanding a hefty pay cheque.

No respite yet? TN govt now files appeal against clearance for screening of Haasan's Vishwaroopam

Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday filed an appeal against the interim order of a single judge of Madras High Court giving clearance for screening of Kamal Haasan' s controversial Tamil movie Vishwaroopam.

The government sought immediate hearing of the appeal on the issue, which is likely to be heard this afternoon.

The decks were cleared on Tuesday night by Justice K Venkataraman, who granted the interim stay of operation of the order made under Section 144 of the CrPC by District Collectors across the state that had prevented release of the movie made with a nearly Rs.100 crore budget.

Advocate General A. Navaneethakrishnan had said yesterday that the court's order was not final and would be challenged.

Justice Venkataraman, who had viewed the spy-thriller on Saturday, had passed the order considering the prima facie case established by Haasan, who questioned the two week ban, imposed after Muslim outfits were up in arms against its release claiming it portrayed their community in a bad light.

In his order, the court had said it was surprising that all District Magistrates/District Collectors of 31 districts, had taken a common decision and passed an order under Section 144 of CrPC "which appears to be strange."

The court had also noted that no independent reason had been given by Collectors and they solely relied on the statement of Muslim organisations.

The court's order yesterday had come as a big relief for Haasan, with estimates that he could have incurred a loss of Rs.30-80 crore due to non-release of the film in the state.

The film, made in Tamil, Telegu and Hindi, had encountered problems in Karnataka also, but is now being screened across the state after police provided adequate security.
